YouVerse Books vs Wonderbly

Both make personalized children’s books. They solve a different problem, and the honest differences are worth knowing before you buy.

Wonderbly details verified

The short answer

  • Wonderbly builds a character from a preset avatar picker. We illustrate the real people from the photos you upload.
  • Wonderbly’s Hooray! It’s Your Birthday supports 5 to 8 customizable story characters: the child plus 4 to 7 family members or friends. Ours fit up to ten customizable illustrated characters, in one title, and you choose who appears.
  • Wonderbly does not charge more for a bigger cast. We do. At a large cast we are the more expensive book.

Side by side

How many people can be illustrated into the story?

YouVerse Books

2 to 4 in The Day My Feelings Got Loud, 2 to 10 in The House That Holds, and 1 to 10 in Heart of Christmas and Family ABCs, all as customizable illustrated characters. You choose who appears.

Wonderbly

Hooray! It’s Your Birthday supports 5 to 8 customizable story characters: the child plus 4 to 7 family members or friends, each assigned a character. Their flagship titles personalize 1 child.

What if the family is bigger than the book allows?

YouVerse Books

Add people to the same story up to that title’s ceiling. If another title supports your cast size, choose it. No current title supports more than ten customizable characters.

Wonderbly

There is no add-on above a title’s ceiling. Their help pages point you to a different title.

How does a real person become a character?

YouVerse Books

From the photos you upload. We illustrate each person and keep the features that make them recognizable: hair, skin tone, face shape.

Wonderbly

A preset avatar builder: name, character, age, skin tone, hair, eye color, glasses. No Wonderbly title turns a photo into an illustrated story character.

Is the writing matched to my child’s reading level?

YouVerse Books

Yes. The same story is rewritten per age band. The House That Holds ships for ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. The Day My Feelings Got Loud ships for 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10.

Wonderbly

No age-banded editions of a single title. Their Tween and Teen birthday books are separate titles, not reading levels of one story.

Does adding people change the price?

YouVerse Books

Yes. Three people are included, then a small fee for each person after that.

Wonderbly

No. Cast size is not a price axis anywhere in their catalog.

Where we are being careful

  • Wonderbly does offer photo upload. It appears as a paid dedication-page add-on on many titles, on two of their cover ranges, and in Your Magic Photo, which reproduces the real photograph. The narrow, accurate claim is that no Wonderbly title turns a photo into an illustrated story character.
  • Some Wonderbly books print more than five names. The Christmas Snowflake reaches nine and Goodnight Everyone reaches seven. Those are names printed in the text, not characters you build and then see illustrated. Hooray! It’s Your Birthday separately supports 5 to 8 customizable story characters. We compare customizable characters to customizable characters.
  • Their cast size is adjustable, not fixed. Hooray! It’s Your Birthday supports the child plus 4 to 7 family members or friends, for 5 to 8 customizable story characters.

When Wonderbly is the better buy

We would rather you get the right book than our book. Pick them if any of this describes you.

The book is for one child

Their flagship titles are built around exactly one child, and that focus shows. Our advantage only starts to matter once other people belong in the story.

You would rather not upload photos

Some parents do not want a child’s photo going anywhere, and some simply do not have a clear one. Picking features from a menu sidesteps both.

You want a big cast on a tight budget

Their price does not move with cast size and ours does. If you want a large cast without a per-person add-on, compare the current prices on both product pages.

You want a bigger catalog to choose from

Their range is larger than ours.

About the price, plainly

We charge for the family. They do not. Every one of our books includes three people, and each person after that adds a small fee, shown on the product page and again at checkout. Wonderbly charges the same within a title regardless of the selected cast size.

So on a large cast we are the more expensive book, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What that buys is the thing their price cannot buy at any tier: up to ten customizable illustrated characters in one story, drawn from your actual photos, in a version written for your child’s age.

The House That Holds and The Day My Feelings Got Loud can also include your dog or cat, drawn from a photo, where the pet option is offered. Plenty of personalized books do pets, so this is not a differentiator, just a thing worth knowing if your family has one.

Current prices always live on the book’s own page, because they change.

Common questions

Can Wonderbly put my whole family in the book?
Up to eight customizable story characters in Hooray! It’s Your Birthday: the child plus 4 to 7 family members or friends. Their flagship titles personalize one child. Above a title’s ceiling there is no add-on, so the answer is a different title. Our books run from 2 to 4 customizable illustrated characters in The Day My Feelings Got Loud up to 10 in The House That Holds, Heart of Christmas and Family ABCs, all inside one story.
Does Wonderbly use my child’s photo?
For a dedication page, sometimes yes, as a paid add-on, and Your Magic Photo reproduces the photograph itself. But no Wonderbly title turns a photo into an illustrated story character. Their characters come from a preset builder: name, character, age, skin tone, hair, eye color, glasses. We start from your photos and illustrate the real people.
Which one is cheaper?
Prices change, so compare the current prices on both product pages. Wonderbly’s price does not change with the number of characters and ours does: we include three people and charge a small fee per person after that. On a large cast we are the more expensive book.
Can I get the same story at my child’s reading level?
With us, yes. The House That Holds is written in four reading bands (ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12) and The Day My Feelings Got Loud in three (5-6, 7-8, 9-10), with the same story rewritten for each level. Wonderbly does not sell age-banded editions of a single title; their Tween and Teen birthday books are separate titles.
